Firework Safety

A key topic at the moment for those of us in the safety industry is bonfire night. The Bureau has put together some info for November 5th. In 2004, The Secretary of State introduced the Fireworks Regulations and whilst these are available for public consumption, we have simplified a few of the guidelines for you.

· Generally speaking, unless you are employed by a fireworks firm, a local authority or are arranging a display, nobody under the age of 18 may be in possession of fireworks in a public place.

· Firework use is prohibited between the hours of 11pm and 7am unless Chinese New Year (1am curfew), Bonfire Night (12am curfew), Diwali (1am curfew) and New Year’s Eve (1am).

· Fireworks are prohibited if they are ‘Category 3’; ie. they produce an A-weighted impulse sound pressure leeve greater than 120db. The sound is measured from a distance of 15m using a measuring device conforming to BS EN 61672.

· To import fireworks, the importer must provide the following information to Customs & Excise; His name and address and the name and address of the person responsible for storing fireworks following importation.
