ESB presents new 'Noise at Work' service
The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 are based on a European Union Directive (2003/10/EE and require the protection of workers from the risks of hearing damage caused by exposure to noise. Hearing damage caused by exposure to noise is permanent and incurable and it is estimated that over 2 million people are exposed to noise levels at work that can be harmful.
Employers have a legal duty to assess the risks to their employees and take the appropriate action to reduce exposure. If they do not comply with the legislation the consequences may be severe and very costly both financially and to their reputation, they risk:
- Prosecution under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
- Refusal of Insurance cover for their business
- Compensation claims from employees who have suffered hearing damage.
ESB can provide a comprehensive assessment of the risks within a business operation and offer advice on appropriate control policies and plans to secure compliance with the requirements of the Regulations.
It is also a legal requirement, and vital to any noise control policy, that information is effectively communicated to employees. They must understand the level of risk, possible effects and consequences, and their duties in ensuring the protection of their hearing.
ESB can tailor training and instruction to the circumstances of the business to ensure employees are informed and aware of the importance of their own role in protecting their hearing.
